Papa John Phillips' 1979 Gibson Dove Custom


This Gibson Dove Custom became John Phillips main performing instrument soon after receiving it in 1979. For over 20 years he made appearances around the world using this guitar.

The photo below of John playing the instrument onstage was taken in January, 1998.

The serial number on this instrument is 70929012. The guitar has a 1/4" endpin jack and under-saddle transducer pickup.

Included with this auction lot is a molded hardshell case, a photo of John playing the guitar, and a LOA from John’s wife, Farnaz Phillips.

John Phillips was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 as a member of The Mamas and the Papas.

 

Papa John Phillips 1994 Gibson 'The Everly' Model Acoustic

John used this instrument primarily for songwriting and playing at home. It does not show the signs of playing wear evident on his Dove.


The Everly model is based on the early 1960s guitars designed for the Everly Brothers. It was updated in the 1990s with the vintage J-200 style 'open moustache' bridge used on the Everly's own prototype instruments.

Papa John Phillips' 1990 Epiphone EJ200CE/VS Acoustic Electric

Modeled after the top-of-the-line Gibson J-200, the EJ200CE, with it's treble side cutaway and under-saddle pickup with onboard EQ, is designed specifically for stage use. This was John's backup acoustic-electric.

The serial number of this instrument is 96110006. Included with this auction lot is a LOA from John’s wife, Farnaz Phillips.

Papa John Phillips 1987 Rickenbacker 360-12

While known for playing a Gibson ES-335-12 during the 1960s with The Mamas and the Papas, John later switched to using Rickenbacker 360-12 models.

This instrument, completed in September, 1987, is finished in the standard FireGlo sunburst The serial number on this guitar is ZI 2519.

Included with this lot is the original black hardshell Rickenbacker case, and a LOA from John’s wife, Farnaz Phillips.

Papa John Phillips' Vintage Martin Ukelele

John owned this Uke for many years. His wife told us that he liked to sit in bed in the evening and play songs on this Uke

Martin Ukeleles don't have serial numbers, so dating this instrument to a specific year is impossible. It is likely from the late 1930s to early 1940s.

Included with this lot is the original 'Alligator' chipboard case, and a LOA from John’s wife, Farnaz Phillips.
